Home Projects

There are several projects that fall under the Ministry of Agriculture and Co-operatives. These projects are funded by various local and internatinal bodies. The table below gives a summary of the projects.


Afican Development Bank

AfDB aims for poverty reduction through the promotion of sustainable growth and productivity grow and strives to operate with country ownership and participatory approaches in project management. Projects belong to the Borrower, and the Bank Group acts simply as a facilitator.


Australian Government

According to a website, although Australia funds no programmes directly in Zambia, Australia channels food aid through WFP and FAO.


Belgium Government

Currently, there is no funding in the agriculture sector


British Government

The British Government through its Department of International Development (DFID) aims to eradicate the world of extreme poverty.


Canadian Government

Although this is an important donor in the country, Canada is currently not involved in the agriculture sector. They are mostly involved in the health sector.


Chinese Government

China is not currently assisting Zambia in agriculture, although they have done a lot of investment in the sector in the country.


Danish Government

The Royal Danish Embassy has a country framework annual budget of approximately US $32 million. The environmental grant (Special Environment Assistance SEA) NRM is part of that frame. This grant is 'renewed' regularly. Pt. Grants given are approximately 40 mill. DKK (approximately US $ 7 million for the period 2004-2007) for a five year period. Note organisations like MS receive their funding directly from the Danish Government and not through the Royal Danish Embassy in Zambia.


Egyptian Government

The Egyptian government aims at cooperating with Zambia in mitigation of food deficiency and self support in prisons through agriculture.


EU - Delegation of the European Commission to Zambia

The EU's development mission is to help to reduce and ultimately to eradicate poverty in the developing countries and to promote sustainable development, democracy, peace and security. The country strategy is focused on Transport, Institutional Development and Capacity Building together with Macroeconomic support and capacity building for economic governance. Non-focal areas are health and education. The EU supports the Government to redefine its role and purpose as the country move towards a better functioning market economy.


Finnish Government

The Finnish Development Policy (2007-) main goal is to eradicate poverty and promote sustainable development in line with the MDGs. The Finnish Rural Development Strategy supports the Finnish Development Policy overall goal to eradicate extreme poverty from the world. The Strategy spells outs the principles, priorities and channels for Finnish Rural Development support. The guiding principles are: Support for national ownership and enabling political and economic operating environment; Support for representation of the poor; Support for rural livelihoods; Support for sustainable use of natural resources; Women's empowerment; Support for research, extension and services; Attention to international operating environment, trade negotiating and policy planning capacity, Finland's focal areas in rural development, guided by partner countries' national development programmes and priorities, are: Support for national strategies and support for the administrative and institutional actors required in the development and implementation of these strategies in the field of rural development; Support for the livelihood improvement of the local poor, especially rural women, and contribution to economically sustainable productive and income-generating activities. Specific priority areas are support for provision of staple foods and food production, formation of farmers associations and organisations of producers, upgrading the degree of processing of products and diversification of productive and income-generating activities. Support for research, extension, training and services that benefit the poor, in particular, in order to strengthen food production and livelihood strategies.


Food and Agriculture Organisation

FAO's mandate is to raise levels of nutrition, improve agricultural productivity, better the lives of rural populations and contribute to the growth of the world economy.


German Technical Cooperation to Zambia

GTZ supported the project called The empowerment of small scale farmers involved in animal husbandry and cropping in Southern Province. This project was phased out.


International Fund for Agricultural Development

The country strategic opportunities paper (COSOP) approved in April 2004 is the basic policy document informing IFAD support to Zambia. The first strategic thrust of the COSOP is to promote smallholder commercialization, including the establishment of equitable s between smallholders and agribusiness and improving access to rural financial services. The second thrust is to assist the more isolated rural populations in raising their productivity, food production and income levels by expanding the outreach and relevance of services and investments to the poorest productive rural households, including women-headed and HIV/AIDS-affected households.


Embassy of Japan

In Zambia, Japanese Government places emphasis on rural development as a way to achieve poverty reduction, considering the fact that approximately 70% of the poor resides in rural areas of the country. Particular attention is paid to assistance to enhancing agricultural productivity, such as construction of irrigation, promotion of livestock production, introduction of agricultural production enhancement techniques, and so on. In addition, assistance is rendered in participatory rural development and capacity development at the local level for development plan formulation and implementation in order to contribute to sustainable rural development.

Japan's ODA to Zambia is currently provided in various forms: grants, technical cooperation, and through funding to international organizations. Embassy of Japan mainly handles grants, including small scale grants to NGOs. Other form of ODA notable in Zambia in the Agriculture Sector is through technical cooperation by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).


Japan International Cooperation Agency

One of JICA's priority areas of cooperation with Zambia, related to agriculture development, is Assistance for Poverty Alleviation with the main focus on Rural Development. Under this priority area, JICA has two key programme areas; namely, the

  1. Program to support Rural Development and
  2. Food Security Program

Support to agriculture is also rendered through another priority area of cooperation, namely, the Assistance for Industrial development toward Poverty Alleviation through Economic Growth. Falling under this priority area is the Program for Expansion of Agricultural Production. Projects are implemented under this framework of cooperation between the Governments of the Republic of Zambia and Japan.


Korea

Country office exists: The country does not assist Zambia in the agriculture sector, however train Zambian students in agriculture.


Libya

Libya has shown strong interest in helping Zambia in agriculture, but negotiations are on going.


Netherlands Government

Private sector development Strategic goal: by 2008, enhanced enabling environment for private sector driven growth, especially in the agricultural sector.

Note: SNV funded directly from the Netherlands Government and not through the Royal Embassy of the Netherlands in Zambia.


Norwegian Government

To contribute to enhancing food security and sustainable environment in relation to management of agro-ecosystems.


Swedish International Development Agency

The overallthe goal of Swedish development cooperation is to create opportunities for poor people to improve their living conditions through support to the implementation of Zambia's Fifth National Development Plan, with a specific sector focus on health, agriculture and energy. Continued emphasis is given to democratic development and the respect for human rights, via support to civil society and through mainstreaming into the focus sectors.

The specific goal of the cooperation for agriculture sector is to contribute to an increased number of small-scale farmers participating in economic development as economic actors.


United States Agency For International Development

The objective is to Increase Private Sector Competitiveness in Agriculture by:

  1. focusing investments on increased access to export markets,
  2. increasing productivity through the adoption of improved production and value-addition technologies,
  3. more responsive financial and business development services,
  4. the strengthening of Zambian public and private sector institutions and,
  5. the adoption of more business-friendly policies.

World Food Programme

The Food for Assets/Training (FFA/T) component of CP 10157.0 and PRRO 10310 are in line with Strategic Priority No.2, protect livelihoods in crisis situations and enhance resilience to shocks. Project activities contribute to Millennium Development Goal No.1 eradicating extreme poverty and hunger, by providing short-term food assistance to vulnerable households, while helping households create sustainable assets or empowerment through training opportunities. WFP activities in Zambia involve primarily relief & recovery and development aimed at protecting and improving livelihoods and allowing people to live more productive lives among poor food insecure households, including HIV/AIDS affected households. The agency arrived in Zambia in 1967 when the Government of Zambia requested help with the large influx of refugees fleeing war in Angola. In more recent times the agency has been assisting with food shortages caused by erratic weather, high levels of poverty and HIV/AIDS - a deadly combination that is creating obstacles to long-term national development.


World Bank

Working for a world free of poverty. Our mission is to help developing countries and their people reach the goals by working with our partners to alleviate poverty. To do that we concentrate on building the climate for investment, jobs and sustainable growth, so that economies will grow, and by investing in and empowering poor people to participate in development. The World Banks builds capacity, contributes to infrastructure, financial systems and combating corruption.


Africare - Zambia

Mission
Africare works to improve the quality of life in Africa.

Harvest Help UK

Provision of practical support to communities in rural Zambia through local organisations.


Heifer International - Zambia

The mission of Heifer International is to work with communities to end hunger and poverty and care for the Earth. Heifer International is a non-profit charitable organisation working to end world hunger by giving cows, goats and other livestock to impoverished, undernourished families around the globe. Before receiving an animal, recipients are trained in animal care and environmentally sound agricultural practices so they will be able to lift themselves out of poverty and become self-reliant for food and income.

HIVOS

Supporting organisations that are involved in training of farmers in organic standards, internal control systems and certification, storage, business contract negotiations, capacity building in farmers association, market economics and business skills.


Internatrional Institute for Communication Development

Promotion of agric-business, quality, volumes and marketing of bee products in Zambia.

Keepers Zambia Foundation

Vision:
The vision of KZF is an empowered and economically secure Zambian community whose people utilize sustainable means to continuously enhance the quality of their lives.

Mission:
KZF strives to improve livelihoods of disadvantaged peri-urban and rural communities through sustainable utilization of natural resources.


Organic Association of Norway

Promotion of agric business, quality, volumes and marketing of beekeeping.

Oxfam Zambia

Oxfam main aim is to work with others worldwide to overcome poverty and suffering. Oxfam GB Zambia's Country Change Strategy for 2004-2008 focuses on contributing to reduced chronic livelihoods through improved food and income security, public health and minimise the impact of HIV & AIDS.


Programme Against Malnutrition

Mission:
To facilitate and provide services for the attainment of prosperous livelihoods for vulnerable people in Zambia through improved food security, nutrition and income.

Overall Objectives:

  1. To raise the nutrition status of Zambians
  2. To increase productivity, improve livelihoods, and promote entrepreneurship in targeted areas.
  3. To promote access to food and non-food items during disaster situations in affected areas.
  4. To provide coordinated support services for the efficient management of emergencies, and development programmes and resources.

World Vision Zambia

World Vision is a Christian relief, development and advocacy organisation dedicated to working with children, families and communities to overcome poverty and injustice.
